Garden Decor at Target
I went to Target yesterday and noticed that they had their garden things out. So I went and looked and found these decorative owl and gnome planter stakes, they are pretty retro looking. I love the little owls and the gnomes. I just couldn't resist they were cool, the gnomes are some crazy bright colors. I also bought a light blue ceramic owl. I am really digging these owl things that have been coming out recently. I remember my great grandmother having ceramic owl figurines everywhere, owl magnets on her refrigerator, and owl pictures on her walls. Now every time I see owl decor, I think of my Granny Norton.

Seed Starting Time!!!!
I should have probably started my tomatoes, tomatillos, and Jalapeño peppers sooner but I was very busy. It's still not too later just later than I wanted too plant them. So I finally got around to planting my seeds today. I planted the following tomato seeds San Marzano, Cherokee Purple, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Amana Orange, Red Pin Cushion Beefsteak, and Various Cherry Tomatoes. Also planted Early Jalapeño peppers, and Verde Tomatillos. The Verde Tomatillos, Jalapeños, and San Marzano Tomatoes are for making Salsa. I love me some homemade Salsa it's the best I plan on growing some Cilantro also for my salsa making habit.

Vole Control
Lately I have been having problems with voles in my garden. They have veracious appetites and have destroyed and killed several of my hardy palms, yuccas, and other plants. Voles are small rodents that burrow underground and eat bulbs, roots, and seeds. They usually eat landscape plants at there roots leaving the leaves and stems for you to find wilted and dead. They look like a short tailed mouse or a small grey hamster. I have set up mouse traps to kill these pesky critters before they cause anymore damage. There are holes all in my yard from there burrows. The most effective way to control voles I have found is with the good old fashioned snap mouse trap. Set several traps outside an active burrow entrance and bate them with peanut butter, diced apple or oats mixed with peanut butter. I use chunky peanut butter and it is pretty effective. To keep Squirrels from stealing the bate of your trap cover the trap with a large bucket or flower pot and place a rock or brick on top of it to keep it from blowing over with the wind.
