Garden Planning 2010/Intro

So I have been kind of planning my garden for spring. I tend to spend all winter thinking about what I should grow next year when spring rolls around. When I first started gardening I was interested mainly in flowers, but now I have decided since like last year I would dive into the world of Vegetables, which I am still learning about from books and experience. There is nothing more rewarding than growing your own food, and its very practical and economical with todays rising food prices. Plus home grown veggies taste better than most of the ones you buy at the supermarket. There is just one issue I am a busy college student I live at home. I have land I could use to plant a large vegetable garden but I just don't have time to carry water out there and weed the darn thing.
To combat these issues iv decided I will grow all my veggies in large pots. I have had some luck so far, in 2009 I grew eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini. All grew fairly well in large pots, the zucchini however produced 2 zukes then the damn thing died, mainly due to the heat, and a bad infestation of squash bugs, and borers. I sprayed it but still within a few days the bugs were back. I don't have good luck with squash. I plan on this year using larger containers that will hold more water. I have seen some ideas on the net for making large self-watering containers out of rubbermaid storage bins. I will probably try this, and I hope I will get more production. This year I plan on growing zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, radishes, lettuce, and maybe carrots. I am also going to try to grow broccoli I have never tried growing broccoli before, so that should be fun.
Anyway I will keep you updated on my garden and its progress. I plant on starting some seeds toward the end of February so watch for updates.
